Morning Show’s Transphobic Remarks Should Spark Outrage from the LGBT Community

January 30, 2010 By: jaysays Category: Commentary, Featured, Thought of the Gay

Janet - Kiss 98.5 FM - WRONG WRONG WRONGJanet Snyder and Nicholas Picholas aren’t exactly superstars to the bulk of the world.  In fact, I’d never heard of them until their morning show which airs in Buffalo, NY on KISS 98.5, took the typically demeaning and irresponsible direction that gets them loads of attention but at a heavy price.

The duo not only belittled the reproductive rights and the right of choice guaranteed by the United States constitution and the historic case Roe v. Wade, but they poked fun of the appearance of a bearded man with a pot belly – and we aren’t talking about Santa Claus or a Nascar fan.  While discussing the “second pregnant man” (being Scott Moore, a pregnant transman), Janet referred to the image of a man with a pregnant belly as “wrong, wrong, wrong.”

All that said, it’s just another crass example of transphobia, right?  It’s not like they said we should murder transpeople, they just said they thought it was, “wrong, wrong, wrong.”  Perhaps that’s why the LGBT community at large has generally ignored the comment? After all, the Facebook group devoted to the issue has only 109 members as of this post.  Perhaps that’s why, three days after the transphobic comments, I’m only just finding out about it in spite of being someone who attempts to stay well informed?

Ironically, before learning of this story, I posted to the jaysays.com page on Facebook the following quote from my favorite American poet, Walt Whitman:

Whoever degrades another degrades me, And whatever is done or said returns at last to me.

I take it personal, in spite of the fact that I am not gender queer or a transperson.  Each and every one of us should take the comments personally, for they are simply the spark that start the fire.  If we do not work together to extinguish these small fires, we are destined to burn everything down.

Please join the facebook group to learn what you can do to help end transhpobia.

  1. Thank you for letting me know about this, I also like to consider myself as pretty well informed but hadnt heard of this. What is wrong with those people?

  2. Thanks Jay. Outrage is building although delayed. This is a perfect opportunity for non-trans folks to stand up and alongside with trans folks in solidarity and outrage.

These are the emails I have gotten back from the station and from sponsors. Plus my response back to the station's HR person.

    Danielle,

Larry Robb has forwarded to me your recent emails regarding Nick and Janet’s Wednesday broadcast.

The Company takes the issues gender identity and sexual orientation very seriously. I certainly understand the indignation you have expressed regarding Wednesday’s broadcast and I do not expect that the matter will be discussed on the air again.

As to your specific questions regarding Nick and Janet, the Company does not publicly comment on internal personnel discussions.

Please feel free to contact me if you would like to discuss this matter further.

    Thank you.

    Noreen McCormack, VP/Human Resources

    My Response

    Hi Noreen,

    Thank you for your response.

While banning the subject may seem appropriate to your organization, we do not feel it is sufficient.

By we, I refer to the people who have signed the petition asking for a public apology.

    http://petol.org/kiss985/petition.html

Entercom promised not to do it again last summer when the morning jocks at KRXQ Sacramento stepped over the line. We need a public apology, a public statement that NO entercom statement will use defammatory language against any minority on the air, and we request positive air time to counteract the damage you have done.

I’ve been in contact with several leading members of the Trans community who would love the opportunity to educate on air with Nick and Janet.

I would personally like to see Janet attend sensitivity training, but I realize that’s an internal matter. A sincere apology goes a long way.

    Danielle,

I have personally contacted WKSE, we currently do not have any advertisements with this specific station. You are referring to a sponsorship for the school spirit contest. We do not advertise products but we are sponsoring the event to raise money for the Women and Children's Hospital of Buffalo.

We do not endorse or support any personal opinions held by the hosts of WKSE shows.

Thank you for your time and concern.

  9. "they poked fun of the appearance of a bearded man with a pot belly – and we aren’t talking about… a Nascar fan."

Now I know this statement doesn't even stand a shadow to stereotyping the LGBT and in fact I hate Nascar but it is still stereotyping. I think that was a mistake to put into your anti stereotyping rant ;).

    10
    • You are absolutely right that the statement was inappropriate, even as a quip. I stereotyped Nascar fans and that was improper under even the most liberal of tests. It's certainly further evidence that we are all hypocrites in some form.

But since I invoked Walt Whitman in the post, I'll take the liberty of invoking him again here:

"Do I contradict myself? Very well then, I contradict myself. I am large, I contain multitudes."

  10. If it makes you feel any better, no one here in Buffalo really likes Janet Snyder. She’s a mother of a 14 year old and acts like a child herself. What kind of message is that sending to her daughter. Not to mention she is quite air-headed, and unintelligent. I don’t even know where to start on the stupid cpmments shes made on air. It’s disgusting, and little girls look up to her. Maybe thats why buffalo has the highest teen pregnancy rates, because they listen to this shit on the radio.
