Texas Governor Rick Perry, known widely for his want of Texas to secede from the United States, is on the campaign trail.  In 2006, Perry successfully used fear mongering about “gays” as a tactic to become governor… again. Perry has a long history of anti-gay bigotry, including being a member of the staunchly anti-equality, pro-imprison gays, Texas Republican Party; however, even he may have sunk to a new low in a recent interview with the Tribune as a reason to move to Texas:

We’re creating more jobs than any other state in the nation. … Would you rather live in a state like this, or in a state where a man can marry a man?

While there is no doubt that job growth is happening in Texas, it’s certainly not a phenomena exclusive to states that actively discriminate against its citizens.  In fact, Massachusetts, the very first state in the Union to introduce legislation that provides for marriage equality, has an economy that is expected to expand by 6.3 percent, generating 216,650 net new jobs by 2016.  Of course, facts don’t matter to Governor Perry – Gay Baiting does.

    Great post, Jay, as usual!

Just wanted to add my two cents —
Texas also ranks #46 in healthcare – there are just 4 states that are in worse shape.

"Texas has the lowest percentage of residents with Health Insurance coverage in the country. With only 75% of the residents being insured, this means that one in four residents within the state is unprotected and could be in financial stress in case of a medical emergency."

Perhaps fighting same-sex marriage isn't an issue Rick Perry or the TX GOP have time for?…

Unfortunately, Rick Perry does not actually support secession. He is just another imperialist kissing Washington DCs ass.

I still think Texas needs an invasion of liberals.

Dallas, Texas has the largest GLBT church in the United States. Prop 2, the anti-gay proposition similar to Prop 8 in Cal. was passed due to the rural churches getting the voters out by even driving them to the voting booths. They used fear tactics about the GLBT communities to get the voters out. Being a large Repuk state also helped pass Prop. 2. The way the Prop. was written was deceitful. Only the first part of the Prop. was emphasized, the churches left the second part out. I am ashamed of Texas. I have lived here all my life. My great-great-great grandfather fought at the Battle of San Jacinto when Santa Anna surrendered his sword to Sam Houston. In fact, my great-great-great grandfather was the one who accepted the sword and took it to Sam Houston. I am ashamed of ex-pres. Bush and Rick Perry.
